Building a Spatial Data Infrastructure at The Nature Conservancy
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Matt Merrifield, Theron Kelso, Susan Miller

Conservation in practice requires access to a wide variety of geographic information. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) employs roughly 500 staff that utilize GIS applications to varying degrees of sophistication. In order to provide access to geodata that is efficient and accurate, TNC is embarking on a process to establish a spatial data infrastructure that supports planning, science, cartography, and marketing along with other business functions of the organization. The core technology behind this effort will be ArcGIS server products, specifically SDE for management and aggregation of large geodatasets. ArcGIS Server 9.2 offers possibilities for integration with other business systems at TNC. This presentation will highlight the business needs of geodata and the process and vision for a federated geodata infrastructure to support them.
