Understanding Troop Readiness in the Time of an Emergency
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Christina McCullough

Emergency management decision makers have always faced difficult challenges. Whether the situation was a natural disaster, civilian unrest, or man-made event, the need for 'real-time' data is imperative and necessary. When our safety concerns are detrimental for our citizens the Governor of the state must call upon the additional resources of the National Guard and Air Guard. The Governor must be informed of the troops' readiness capabilities at a minutes notice. Not only, must units support the National mission abroad, but they also, must be ready to support the mission at home. Understanding the readiness and capabilities of a State's units can strongly influence our Governor's decisions. Are there enough units available to complete the mission? Where are the locations of the available units? These answers are continually changing mission requirements provided by our military. GIS gives our decision makers the 'real time' visibility they need.
