Partnering in High Resolution Terrain Data Production: Semi-automated Solutions
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Kari Zehner, Ryan Ashker

Terrain data is a critical input to military planning. Where terrain at thirty meter post-spacing was once sufficient, military analysts now regularly request terrain at ten meter post-spacing over large geographic areas. The Marine Corps Intelligence Activity (MCIA) is working to satisfy analysts' growing demand for these High Resolution Terrain elevation (HRTe) products. This presentation describes the collaborative effort of MCIA and BAE Systems to overcome issues in HRTe Level 3 (ten meter post-spacing) production, with an emphasis on the design of semi-automated solutions using ARC GRID. The primary design consideration is the need to balance high product quality against project cost and schedule constraints. The presenters will discuss various terrain finishing tools and introduce Targeted Smoothing, an algorithm which improves the visual appeal of terrain products by selectively smoothing editing signatures without reducing the accuracy of significant terrain features.
