Strategic Planning for Enterprise GIS
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Durmus Cesur

Strategic planning is crucial for the success of any Enterprise Geographic Information System (eGIS) in any organization. Many problems arise due to lack or inadequacy of strategic planning in the enterprise GIS implementation. Strategic plan for eGIS provides a guide for the future of eGIS in the organization with an assessment of the current situation and communicates the direction to organizational staff and the public. The Enterprise GIS strategic plan at the least includes need assessment, goals, objectives, and implementation initiatives, projects and actions at appropriate detail. This paper provides a road map for developing or updating a strategic plan for enterprise GIS and monitoring and controlling of the implementation of the strategic plan. The strategic planning case study is provided from San Antonio River Authority eGIS implementation.
