The purpose of this project is to develop an integrated decision support tool to predict impacts of wildland fire on drinking water sources. Federal wildfire managers are required to immediately assess and monitor streams where retardant drops directly impact streams. The ICWater tool, developed to model accidental and intentional threats to public drinking water supplies was used to assess retardant impacts for a case study in Mill Creek, Montana. A second case study was also performed to determine if the runoff and sediment outputs available from GeoWEPP, could be linked to the pollutant routing capabilities of ICWater to aid decision making in establishing fire suppression priorities, and be useful to water supply managers following wildfire in a municipal watershed. The output from the GeoWEPP program provides sufficient information on runoff, sediment yield, and sediment size distribution to provide input for the ICWater program.
