Creating an Enterprise GIS at the Unified Port of San Diego
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Ari Isaak, Malcolm Meikle

The Port of San Diego manages approximately 6000 acres around San Diego Bay. The Engineering, Environmental Services, Harbor Police and Dispatch, Land Use Planning, Maritime Operations and Properties, Public Art, Real Estate and Strategic Management Services departments each use their own independently developed workflow to manage spatial data. We have been working towards bringing a familiar GIS interface to the over 600 employees at the Port. Our main challenge is to access each department's spatial data within an easy-to-use geographic interface. We are focusing on understanding the front end and back end of each workflow. Some of the techniques we use are pop-up window hyperlinks, ArcGIS Explorer custom tasks, editable ArcGIS Server services, ArcGIS for AutoCAD, ArcGIS Mobile and scheduled database synchronization. We also utilize a port-wide blog to communicate directly with end users.
