In recent years, interest for the biomass energy use rises as one of the countermeasures against global warming. However, unplanned development of biomass plantation brings on environmental and social problems such as tropical rainforest destruction and competing issue of food. Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) researched natural and social conditions in Asian countries while defining potential food crop field and primary forest to develop the Biomass Energy Use Business Evaluation GIS Software in the Asian region. The developed GIS software enables anybody to perform biomass potential map production, site selection and economic feasibility evaluation considering sufficient environmental and social factors. The software can apply any biomass resources including cellulosic biomass such as scrap wood and straw as residue from agriculture and forestry industry. The developed system will contribute future direction for utilization of biomass energy.
