Data Standardization: A USAREUR Sustainable Range Program Perspective
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Author(s): Helene Touyeras

Developing GIS data for numerous military training sites in various countries is one thing. Ensuring data currency and quality is maintained consistently across the whole data collection is another one: the multiplication of data items makes data standardization and quality control a more challenging undertaking.

In U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR), the Sustainable Range Program GIS Regional Support Center faces this challenge, as its area of responsibility was increased from two countries (Germany & Italy) to three MACOMs (EUCOM, CENTCOM & AFRICOM). The use of foreign military training sites increases, resulting in higher needs for geospatial products, and for corresponding reliable data.

This presentation will outline how USAREUR SRP is dealing with this change of scale in its GIS activity, highlighting tools and procedures that were developed to help building a consistent, standardized data collection.
