Abstract

Developing a GIS for Private Forestry in Finland
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Author(s): Henry Schneider

Forestry Development Centre Tapio will develop a new forest data management system for the Regional Forestry Centres in Finland. The system is designed for managing and updating forest stand data obtained by laser scanning. We hope to increase the annual area of forest inventoried by 50% and cut inventory costs by 40%. There will be 600-700 users when the system will be operational. About 1,5 million hectares of forest data from private-owned forests will be collected annually and the aim is to keep the data not older than 4 years. The system will consist of a centralized forest resource database (Oracle), ArcGIS Server and a desktop application based on ArcEditor. The other essential components of the system are a data collection application (on a handheld data collection device with a GPS) and a simulation and optimization tool. The main components of the system are scheduled to be operational in 2010.
