Abstract

130 Years of Change in the Missouri River Floodplain
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Charles Sellmeyer, Jason Sheeley

We performed a time series analysis of land cover change in the Missouri River floodplain from 1879 through 2006. A rich legacy of historic maps and aerial photography maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was used in the study to produce detailed mapping for key years during the study period. ArcGIS was used to perform the analysis and to produce output maps, charts, and animations. We will discuss how GIS was used to perform the analysis and how GIS is used to plan Missouri River ecosystem restoration activities and to monitor progress. Join us on a journey of discovery as we use GIS to show the Missouri River much as it looked during the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition; how it changed due to the influences of agriculture, settlement, navigation, and flood control; and how ongoing ecosystem restoration projects are altering it for the future.
