A Custom ArcGIS Toolset for Water Resources Vulnerability Analyses: Mississippi

Mississippi groundwater and surface-water resources, including shallow aquifers, streams, dams and reservoirs, represent 'key resources' and 'key assets' as defined by the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) of 2006. The Water Resources Vulnerability Assessment Tools (WRVAT) have been developed to assess the vulnerability of groundwater, surface water and dam resources in Mississippi by identifying potential areas of weakness in the infrastructure or resources, and providing guidance in prioritizing vulnerability reduction decisions. The WRVAT facilitate assessment of and decision making regarding surface- and groundwater resources at different scales, as well as the statewide inventory of dams, to permit resources within Mississippi to be directed efficiently to those that merit attention. For example the WRVAT have been used to evaluate Mississippi’s entire database of over 3,700 dams in less than twenty minutes. An integrated file-system geodatabase allows managers to track analyses and results from source data to model outputs.
