Visualizing the National Mall
Track: Modeling
Author(s): Matthew Safford

Often called 'America's Front Yard,' the National Mall includes some of the most well-known monuments and receives over 25 million visitors each year. GIS is used to support a long-term planning effort for the mall. Aerial photos and topographic maps were used as a base, features such as roads, buildings, trees and water features were digitized or GPS'd. Attributes such as height, tree species, and type of surface were used to create symbols and fill patterns. A virtual 3-dimensional representation of the Mall was created and used to envision various management scenarios for the planning effort.
