Abstract

Locating Potential Wetland Mitigation Sites in Monroe County
Track: Environmental Management
Author(s): Justin Cole

With the economic growth of Monroe County, a need for wetland mitigation banking was required. The GIS Services Division worked with County Engineers to develop the mitigation plan. The sites were prioritized using distances from existing wetland characteristics. The characteristics were analyzed using raster classification and were combined to a four-digit cell prioritizing areas. The sites chosen were in Monroe County Park Lands. The sites will be monitored to assess the mitigation efforts. Monitoring programs are often labor, time, and economically intensive. Understanding these limitations, we have developed an innovative approach to wetland monitoring. In addition to traditional scientific wetland monitoring techniques, Monroe County will enlist and involve the general public in the monitoring of mitigated wetlands. The public monitoring will be conducted through the guidelines of the Marsh Monitoring Program. Data collected by scientists and constituents will be analyzed and posted on an interactive website.
