Save the Children-USA, Bangladesh country office has recently established GIS for the Food security program in Barisal coastal areas in Bangladesh. Using GIS, the program initiated to demarcate program services coverage geographically. During last cyclone SIDR hit on 15th November 2007, GIS was used extensively for showing information in the map regarding rapid emergency needs assessment, service points, ranking areas on damages and on-going relief activities. This helped tremendously for rapid emergency response planning and information sharing. In regular program, M&E unit is showing nutritional status map in gradient colors from program data records which helps the managers to assess geographical relationship with nutrition and to introduce further intervention for better outcome. Collecting shelter center’s GPS coordinates with necessary information is helpful to accommodate vulnerable people in the centers during disaster in better organized ways. Thus use of GIS illustrates better planning, decision making and implementation of development programs.
