Paths to Violence: Analyzing the Geography of Gunshot Victims
Track: Health and Human Services
Author(s): Douglas Wiebe, Megan Heckert

Gunshot injury is the leading cause of death in 10-19 year old African American males and is the second leading cause of adolescent death overall. These injuries can be seen as the end result of a web of factors that include alcohol, firearms, and dangerous urban environments. A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania is employing GIS to better understand this phenomenon. The four-year study will apply epidemiologic space-time modeling to understand in what way and to what extent adolescents are exposed to alcohol and firearms during their daily activities, and the resulting risk to be assaulted by gunshot or with a non-gun weapon. To make this happen, the team built a tool to enable fast and reliable data collection of retrospective data. This presentation will focus on the development of a GIS-based interview tool for rapid data entry of gunshot victims’ paths leading up to their injuries.
