Green Commuting in New Zealand: Developing Sustainable Transport Initiatives
Track: Transportation
Author(s): Ebony Wickramanayake

As New Zealand progresses and the population grows, sustainability has been put at the top of the nation's agenda. Sustainable development initiatives are being prioritized at all levels of the public and private sectors.

Opus International Consultants has completed a number of sustainable transport projects, including the development of corporate and academic green travel plans. These assist staff and students in their daily commute to their place of work or study. Other projects have centered on the planning of public (bus/train) and active (walking/cycling) transport options within urban areas. Mobile and desktop GIS applications have also been used to aid the improvement of neighbourhood accessibility.

This presentation looks at where GIS techniques are making a difference in the development of these strategies using recent case studies.
