Abstract

Migrating 20 Years of Data and Applications to a Modern GIS
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): Keith Stump, Jeff Barnett

The Knoxville, Knox County, Knoxville Utilities Board GIS (KGIS) has operated a shared GIS serving the area since 1985. A project was recently completed by KGIS to migrate two decades of data and applications to an Esri ArcGIS platform. The project involved considerable planning and coordination with numerous stakeholders to ensure the new system would meet user needs. A design was developed that identified users, data, hardware, software, network infrastructure, and 17 custom applications needed to deploy a successful system. Data was migrated to populate over 600 feature classes in the newly designed geodatabase. Desktop, server, and web applications were developed to support data maintenance, access, and analysis needs. The system was deployed in phases to allow for adequate training and ease the transition. The presentation will review the process used to deploy the system including management techniques that have helped complete the project on-schedule and under budget.
