Generating New Canadian Topographic Maps
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Author(s): Yvan Désy, Sylvain Lemay, Robin Becker

The Centre for Topographic Information (CTI) of Natural Resources Canada has re-established a production line for the updating and publication of Canadian Topographic Maps. This production has been highly automated using Esri’s ArcGIS, Opalis, and Safe’s FME to obtain and integrate vector topographic data from various databases.

10% of the approximately 13,000 titles in the National Topographic System at the 1:50K scale are targeted for publication. Titles will be published in PDF format to meet the needs of the traditional paper map clientele, academic community and Government of Canada.

Several levels of revision are envisaged. As a minimum, all titles published will include new roads and hydrology, metric contours, and updated toponyms and administrative boundaries. Special effort will be made to update “limited access” roads in forested areas. Higher levels of map revisions will be undertaken only with a partnership agreement with other government departments or agencies for specified areas.
