Abstract

Hawaii Fire Fuels Project
Track: Emergency Medical Services/Fire
Author(s): Rich Nezelek, Chris Chiesa

The goal of this project is to create and add a fuels risk element to the Digital Comprehensive Plan Suite of tools under development for Hawaii counties, including the Spatial Growth Model, Risk and Vulnerability Model, and Water Impact Model. The upgraded identification of fuel types and hazards for each county will permit improved fire hazard analysis by Fire and Civil Defense personnel. These will produce land use/fuels condition models for fire and emergency management personnel. These fuels maps would be a considerable asset for the Hawaii Fire Departments, especially for the wildland-urban interface areas undergoing increased development pressure.

A primary outcome of the PDC-sponsored fuels map project is a high-resolution, up-to-date fire fuels map as well as a process to periodically update the map to reflect land use/land cover changes. This will be an important contribution to fire planning activities within our local communities.
