INSPIRE and Beyond: Where Next for the European SDI?
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Author(s): Stephen Peedell, Jean Dusart

With the adoption of the INSPIRE (INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe) Directive in May 2007, Europe has witnessed an unprecedented collaboration towards building a European SDI. EU Member States are transposing the Directive into their national legislation, and expert groups are working together to develop the technical specifications which will become part of geospatial data, systems and services across the EU. The Joint Research Centre is the Technical Coordinator of INSPIRE, and from this perspective we present in this paper an overview of the current status of its implementation and look forward to the future research challenges and technology opportunities for evolving the European SDI.
