Genius-DB—GIS-Based Map Production at swisstopo
Track: Cartography and Map Production

Swisstopo, the Swiss Federal Office of Topography, has chosen Esri to build a cartographic production system based on Esri ArcGIS 9.3. The system leverages the symbolization and editing tools in ArcGIS Desktop, the data management strengths of ArcSDE geodatabases, and the workflow management capabilities in the ArcGIS JTX extension. As these products are all extensible, this combination is an excellent platform for developing swisstopo’s GIS based cartographic production system.
This swisstopo-Esri project, called Genius-DB, is part of broad work at swisstopo to develop new systems for geodata capture, management, and mapping. Genius-DB focuses on the creation and update of cartographic data in Digital Cartographic Models (DCMs) from 1:25,000 to 1:1,000,000. This presentation provides an update on the status of Genius-DB, giving insight into some of the project challenges, and presenting some custom functionality developed for the system.
