The Barrick Gold SDI: Any Data, Anytime, Anywhere
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): Iain Allen

In late 2007, Barrick Gold initiated a project to develop a Spatial Data Infrastructure, intended to make all our spatial data available to all our staff globally. The plan was to establish Regional SDI nodes in Santiago, Salt Lake City, Johannesburg and Perth. We envisioned each node providing access to the global data catalog via a GIS Portal.

Barrick allows a mixed GIS environment on the desktop, with both Esri and MapInfo clients, but chose Esri technology for backend data storage, catalog creation and data search and delivery. We use ArcGIS Server and the Portal Toolkit with SQL Server and Oracle databases. Supporting two desktop clients was a significant complication, but was a mandated requirement of the initiative.

We have also developed a custom metadata editor and other tools that help us capture, document and catalog our data.
