HEC-GeoRAS: Hydraulic Modeling Support Using ArcGIS
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Cameron Ackerman

Using geospatial data for support of water resources modeling is no longer a luxury afforded to only the most GIS savvy, but has become a commonplace method of support for performing modeling and analysis. Because a GIS provides the capability to process and swiftly visualize data it is ideally suited to assist in river hydraulics modeling. HEC-GeoRAS employs tools in ArcGIS to support hydraulic modeling with the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). HEC-RAS model creation benefits from visualizing base data such as aerial photographs in concert with ground surface data to layout geometric data layers for extracting positions, lengths, and elevations. Automated floodplain delineation methods allow modelers to see simulation results within a geospatial context thereby more efficiently assisting modelers to refine the HEC-RAS model.
