Using HEC-GeoHMS to Develop a Hydrology Model
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): Matthew Fleming, James Doan

The Geo-spatial Hydrologic Modeling Extension (HEC-GeoHMS) is an ArcGIS tool that can be used to create subbasin and river networks from digital terrain data. Tools are also available in HEC-GeoHMS to estimate hydrologic modeling parameters, like loss rates and impervious area, using available GIS data. Finally, HEC-GeoHMS can generate model files for the Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS). New capabilities and user enhancements are continuously being added to HEC-GeoHMS. The purpose of this paper is to inform GIS users and hydrologic engineers of updates to HEC-GeoHMS. A major recent development of HEC-GeoHMS is its migration to ArcGIS 9.2/9.3. This includes capabilities available in previous versions as well as new tools to assist in the development of an HEC-HMS model. New tools have been added to assist in the estimation of hydrologic modeling parameters. The estimated parameters will automatically populate the HEC-HMS model files and will not have to be entered manually.
