The LA County Solar Mapping Portal
Track: Climate Change
Author(s): Mark Greninger

The LA Solar Portal (http://lacounty.solarmap.org), released on Earth Day 2009, lets the 10.5 million residents and businesses in the County quickly access a highly accurate estimate of the potential for solar photovoltaic systems on their property. Residents and solar installers do not need to get up on every roof to see if it can support solar, saving time and money.

The portal leverages the most advanced and detailed large-area solar potential model in the world. Covering more than 3,000 square miles, the County model includes shading from nearby trees, buildings, and mountains, and uses the pitch and slope of the roof to accurately estimate the amount of incoming sunlight every 5 feet, representing over 350 million individual measurements.
