Abstract

Globe of Natural Hazards - A New Risk Management Tool
Track: Insurance
Author(s): Andreas Siebert

An excellent example of the wealth of knowledge Munich Reinsurance Company has developed is the “Globe of Natural Hazards”, a geo-solution which combines the geoscientific data and findings the Geo Risk Research Dept. has accumulated over a period of 35 years.

The bilingual (German and English) DVD shows natural hazards and climate effects at a glance: the global maps are presented on a 3D globe, underlaid with satellite images. Thanks to its comprehensive information, the globe is an important tool for identifying risk locations worldwide, evaluating them from a geoscientific and insurance perspective, and thus increasing risk transparency.

The original natural hazards geodata warehouse is based on Esri ArcSDE technology, where the data updates, quality checks and grid conversion operations have been implemented. Additionally popular web application NATHAN – an ArcIMS based tool – is still available for people interested in cutting-edge global natural hazard information (www.munichre.com/nathan).
