NOAA Climate Services Portal: Climate Data and Statistics
Track: Climate Change
Author(s): Rich Baldwin, Glen Reid

The public need for relevant climate data, analysis and services continues to increase. Climate impacts to commerce sectors such as energy, agriculture, engineering, tourism, health, and insurance are of primary focus. NOAA is addressing these needs from diverse perspectives by implementing a NOAA Climate Services Portal. NOAA participating organizations engage these customers by providing access to climate data through a federated system. One role of the National Climatic Data Center is to provide standards base web services and access portlets that can be used by customers and partners throughout the world. This requires data interoperability which is provided through OGC specifications. Implementing the services provided by GIS portal toolkit and ArcGIS server, the NCS portal team can build client applications which use these services to provide search and discovery to climate data, services, and products. The portal is scheduled to be online for public access in the Fall 2009.
