Mapping Katrina-Damaged Homes Not Yet Rebuilt in Southern Mississippi
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Authors: David Holt

Hurricane Katrina decimated the coast of southern Mississippi over 4 years ago and there are still issues with identifying properties that have fallen into blighted status. This project used GPS and GIS to canvas the southern three counties of Mississippi south of I-10 to identify the 8,300 blighted properties by point data to be tied with parcel data for use by the governors office to help in reconstruction efforts. This project used 14 students and 3 GIS managers to compile the data. We have shown that the boots-on-the-ground method was more cost effective and time sensitive than previous methods and is a valid methodology to responding to large natural disasters. The data were compiled to an ArcGIS Server with mashups to Google earth and street view for analysis.
