Abstract

Rapid Completion of a Statewide Resource Assessment Utilizing a Contractor
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Authors: Trent Botkin

New Mexico State Forestry undertook the coordination of a Statewide Assessment of natural resources—all jurisdictions, all ecosystems—from a "forests as a cornerstone" perspective. The Statewide Assessment will be geospatially based and will provide an analysis of forest conditions and trends. The Assessment will also be used to create a statewide Forest Resource Strategy and Response Plan, which will provide long-term strategies for investing state, federal, and other resources to manage identified priority landscapes. To expedite the completion of this project and obtain professional experience beyond the Forestry Division, this project was contracted to The Nature Conservancy, The Forest Guild, and The Trust for Public Land. These contractors, assisted by a staff of diversely-experienced Forestry staff, were able to coordinate GIS data collection from all relevant government and NGO organizations and develop complex analysis, models and resulting management plans over a period of 8 months.
