Geoinformatics in Support of Peacebuilding, Humanitarian Assistance and Development Cooperation
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Authors: Juerg Krauer

Accurate and updated geospatial information is crucial to provide effective support in peace building, relief operations and reconstruction. From the very early stage of negotiations to final rehabilitation measures and sustainable resources management, geoinformation systems, maps and web applications developed by the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Berne, have been widely used at all decision levels within governmental institutions, UN agencies, and INGOs in Sudan.

The paper presentation zooms in on potentials of geospatial technologies in terrain and image analysis, data integration, compilation and validation, and focuses on experiences with web mapping, GeonetworkOS and the development of a map shop for the dissemination and sharing of geospatial data and maps. The presentation concludes with lessons learned by research, education and implementation activities in the framework of the 'Sudan Capacity Development Programme in Geoinformation Management', funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
