Abstract

3D Visualization of Drug Seizure Events for Strategic Analysis
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Authors: Philip Burkhart

The U.S. Department of Justice's National Drug Intelligence Center produces domestic strategic intelligence on drug related crime for policy makers and law enforcement officials. GIS plays a vital role in fulfilling this mission and uses a variety of techniques for analysis. 3D visualization offers an innovative technique to display, analyze, and understand a more comprehensive picture of the illicit drug trade at national and regional scales. Multiple variables, such as event type, number of seizures, and quantity seized, can be simultaneously displayed along with its respective changes in spatial and temporal context. The use of sampling grids also offers a consistent metric for aggregating and visualizing the seizure data within a 3D framework.
