Abstract

Integrating ArcGIS Server and Flex: Highlighting Trees in Washington, DC
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Authors: Holli Howard, Mike Alonzo

This year, Casey Trees launched a new interactive web map integrating ArcGIS Server 9.3 and Adobe Flex. This map uses the latest technology migrating from an ArcIMS system introduced on our site in 2004. The new application provides the user with details of Casey Trees plantings and trees inventoried throughout the District in a streamline, high speed interactive map. High resolution satellite imagery is incorporated to enable residents to compare their own property's tree canopy to the District's Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Goal of 40%. The search function uses the Master Address Repository (MAR), an address locating service created by DC GIS. The next enhancement to the website invites the user to add any noteworthy tree in DC including a Champion Tree nomination or a newly planted tree. The presentation will also discuss the challenges to implementing a login function for security and uploading photos in a mapping application.
