Abstract

Authoritative Data: What is It? Why Now? A Taxonomy?
Track: Cadastral and Land Records
Authors: Ben niemann, Earl Epstein

Authoritative data is data that is official, based upon competent authority, or reliable because it comes from an expert. Properly defined and used authoritative data is essential to an American Multipurpose Cadastre (AMPC).

Proper definition and use of authoritative data is now crucial. Easily made spatial data representations are generally undifferentiated in their appropriateness for land planning and management. One recent distinction is between authoritative and casual data. (Dangermond, ArcNews, 31.3) There are others. The proliferation of undifferentiated representations creates spatial data chaos. Another reason for timely action is the shift of government role from that of provider to coordinator. (Folger, Congressional Research Service, 2009) Recent examples of this chaos and evolving roles will be described.

A taxonomy will be presented. A basis is the recognized role of the data and representations in the land planning and management process.
