BIOS: Migrating Complex Viewers from ArcIMS to ArcGIS Server
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management

For many years the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has developed and maintained several ArcIMS viewers (http://imaps.dfg.ca.gov). Our most complex map viewer, the Biogeographic Information and Observation System (BIOS) (http://bios.dfg.ca.gov), incorporates over 500 (and growing) individual biological GIS datasets gathered from various sources in one mapping application that allows the user to dynamically search the catalog and choose which datasets to add to the map interface. This design of a very large accessible data catalog does not fit into the recommended or typical web map design patterns or into the available application templates that are provided for the current ArcGIS Sever web mapping APIs.

In this paper we will present some of the behind-the-scenes challenges and solutions we have discovered in migrating such a complex web application from ArcIMS to ArcGIS Server.
