Track: Benefits of GIS

Municipalities who manage complex and extensive infrastructure are facing the challenges of the current economic slowdown; imposing budgetary constraints and inability to add additional resources. In order to sustain the same level of service for the customers, municipalities must organize themselves in a manner that leads to higher productivity through workflow automation.

One area for serious consideration is enabling the enterprise mobile workforce to be more efficient in their daily workflow by reducing the flow of paper documents/forms and redundant data entry. This paper will discuss the case of the City of Oceanside Water Utilities Department's implementation of mobile GIS technology that integrates multiple workflows with map data and other datasets.

The audience will learn about the importance of GIS automation in the Operations area, the efficiency improvements, the process taken to get there, and the challenges to make it happen as well as the lessons learned from their experiences.
