Abstract

Multiscale Wildlife Habitat Assessment Mapping Using the HAB Method
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Authors: Andrew Hackethorn

The Habitat Appraisal and Barter (HAB) approach developed by Northwest Habitat Institute is a methodology used to measure habitat quality by considering diversity, complexity and available habitat size. The HAB process incorporates GIS tools to record the ecological criteria required to establish a Habitat-Ecosystem currency. Species-habitat-function relationships are stored in the Interactive Habitat and Biodiversity Information System (IBIS) and are used in HAB to compare "values" between project areas, reference sites and alternative scenarios. The HAB approach can develop detailed habitat maps and relies heavily on geospatial relationships and GIS to establish a consistent method to assess multiple habitats across a landscape using a multi species approach . The Northwest Habitat Institute has employed this method throughout the Pacific Northwest and California with the Bonneville Power Administration, US Army Corps of Engineers, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Idaho Fish and Game, and the Trust for Public Land among others.
