Approaches from a Water/Wastewater Utility
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Storm Water
Authors: Jose Lopez, Mary Helen Wood, Dave Feuer

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) support 430,000 customers over 460 square miles, and GIS is an integral technology to provide water and sewer services to these customers. WASD has created a fully customized desktop solution to maintain their GIS in ArcGIS 9.3. The customization includes automatic primary key generation; automatic updates to parent/child relationships such as valves and value asset data; automatic management of details such as map inset boxes for condensed areas in the county; robust set of configurable map display; and plotting tools. Additionally, WASD has upgraded its ArcGIS Server application from 9.2 to 9.3 and included a variety of new tools including custom tracing via specific business rules, web edits, integrations with CIS (Customer Information System), and PCTS (Project Control & Tracking System).

This presentation will not only highlight the custom software, it will address how this investment is saving the county time and money.
