Abstract

Aerial Thermography: The Facility Energy Managers Treasure Map
Track: Facilities Management
Authors: Daniel Michalec, Monique Lewis, Wayne Ratliff

Thermal infrared (IR) imagery is a mature technology used by Facility Energy Managers for years to detect energy loss and air quality/safety issues. This presentation will focus on the use of large-scale aerial thermal IR platforms that offer a macro-scale evaluation of potential energy savings that can be identified from poorly performing roofing and window systems and above and below ground heating, cooling and water infrastructure. This presentation will discuss benefits of using this technology to provide spatially accurate imagery in determining a logical priority to Energy Conservation Measures (ECM's); identification of "undocumented" infrastructure; and the capability to create an accurate inventory of problem areas to prioritize repairs or replacements.

This presentation will conclude with a case study of federal client's strategic investment in a thermographic building survey that identified and quantified energy loss. The case study will highlight the payback that can be realized from energy savings for facilities.
