Abstract

Environmental Data Management: PMP and Six Sigma for Success
Track: Environmental Management
Authors: Jennifer Lillis

Poor project planning is a fundamental reason that so many GIS projects are doomed to fail. Project success and failure can be characterized as cost overruns, schedule overruns, or failure to meet client expectations. Both the Project Management Institute (PMI) and Six Sigma offer solutions for general project management that can be effectively applied to GIS-related projects. PMI recognizes project phases that are interdependent and include: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Control, and Closure. Six Sigma recognizes two methodologies to either improve (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) or develop (Define, Design, Analyze, Design, Verify) business processes. The implementation of a standardized management approach will improve the success rate of a project
