Abstract

GIS role in NG9-1-1
Track: Emergency Medical Services/Fire
Authors: Kim Paxton

The National Emergency Number Association (NENA) has identified that the existing 9-1-1 system is not adequate for the newer IP-based communication devices of today. As 9-1-1 moves to an IP based Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) system there are many actions needing to be accomplished. NENA has identified that GIS technology will play a critical role in NG9-1-1. Synchronizing the legacy location databases of today's 9-1-1 with our GIS layers will ensure a positive transition to NG9-1-1. What data is required? This topic will discuss NENA standards and how to ensure that your GIS is ready for NG9-1-1.
