MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc., with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, is performing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) of the potable water system at the base and incorporating the data into a project GIS. The base has more than 200 miles of water mains and a variety of surface control features, approximately 9,000 in number. Most of the system is over 40 years old and existing records are either unavailable or incomplete. The SUE effort involves extensive records review, GPS survey of the control features, and the location of subsurface pipes using advanced geophysical methods. GPS coordinates, photographs and engineering drawings are stored within an ArcGIS geodatabase compliant with DoD-specified spatial data standards (SDSFIE).
ArcGIS provides efficient management of spatial and non-spatial SUE data to reduce utility conflicts, construction delays, liability, and will aid in hydraulic modeling of the water system thus supporting Marine Corps' 'grow-the-force' initiative.
