Abstract

Managing a Campus; Teaching Content in the Context.
Track: Facilities Management
Authors: J. Scott Sires

Visualizing spatially significant events clarifies the best and highest service of Campus facilities. What are the metrics, volumes and uses of a campus? How do students move through a campus? Where are the crowded classrooms? To experience space utilization Brookhaven College students adapted the Building Interior Space Data Model (BISDM) and as a result discovered unexpected applications for the geospatial data. For example, students quickly developed ADA accessibility maps for the Dallas County Community College District, and developed campus routes based upon class schedules. In another case study, the Garland Independent School District (GISD, 75 campuses, 250,000 population) benefited from a proof of concept study to map an elementary campus. Brookhaven students merged the BISDM with the data model and style of Esri's Campus Map Template to create a customized solution for the GISD. This presentation demonstrates the learning process from space modeling to a 3D virtual campus.
