Replacing Local Data by Web Services Using ArcGIS Desktop, SDI
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: Biniam Neguse, Rainer Kettemann

Government organizations are known as enterprises using various brands of GIS software in their departments. They are now starting to offer more and more data as OGC web services (especially Web Map Services-WMS, and Web Feature Services -WFS), and they are using heterogeneous server software. Currently the data mostly is used as converted and restructured copies. The presentation shows, how such local data used in Desktop GIS can be replaced step by step with upcoming web services from a Spatial Data Infrastructure. A main part is to point out the facilities, strengthens and weakness, restrictions, special needs and future view of using Esri ArcGIS server 9.3 as a Web Services provider in one hand, and in the other hand the use of Esri ArcGIS 9.3 as thick client for retrieve, analyze and visualize these services. The research work at HFT Stuttgart is based on data from the German state Baden-Württemberg.
