Abstract

A Conceptual Poverty Mapping Data Model
Track: Education
Authors: Felicia Akinyemi

Poverty mapping is a new GIS application area but there no generic data model for use. Examples exist already of census, marine, parcel, transportation and water utilities data models among others. A conceptual poverty data model is developed to facilitate spatial data use among practitioners. It is a challenge to handle a multidimensional social problem as poverty using a spatial framework with myriads of poverty indicators out there in use. This paper identifies key thematic layers common to poverty mapping projects, entities, relationships and constraints. An implicit goal of the study is the stimulation of lively debates which can eventually lead to and facilitate the development and consequent adoption for use of a generic poverty data model
