Abstract

State of Southern Steelhead, Case Study Santa Ynez River, California
Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Authors: Timothy Robinson

Southern steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were federally listed endangered species in 1997. The Cachuma Project Biological Opinion (BO) and Fish Management Plan set the directive to monitor/research the species and improve habitat quality throughout their designated critical habitat within the Santa Ynez River, Santa Barbara County, California. A synthesis of the results of 15 years of monitoring the species will be presented in the context of the state of steelhead in the Southern California DPS (Santa Maria River to the Mexican Border). A dynamic multi-variant GIS-database has been developed to address research, regulatory compliance needs related to steelhead migration, spawning and over-summering, supplementation of passage flows, regulatory compliance reporting, adaptive management of water rights releases, developing annual monitoring plans to optimize sampling locations, analyze habitat changes, track short-/long-term trends, understand population dynamics and lifecycle strategies, public outreach, and support of the National Marine Fishery Service's Southern California Steelhead Recovery Plan.
