What Senior Management Wants: Value-Added Approach to Systems Enhancement
Track: Pipeline and Gas Utilities
Authors: Roberto Morales, Greg McCool

The current economic climate requires companies to rethink how they spend money maintaining and growing their corporate geographic information system (GIS). The challenge comes with prioritizing projects from multiple stakeholders with various agendas and demonstrating value to leadership. A structured methodology was needed for managing corporate GIS projects with an emphasis on improving business processes.

Individual best practices were used to assess the health of the current system, determine high level GIS goals and capture supportive stakeholder projects. Tools were created to evaluate findings and document potential value or cost savings for leadership approval. Each technique fed a status dashboard used to communicate progress to management. The methods described here were brought together as a comprehensive system for continuous improvement of the corporate GIS.
