Abstract

Urban Search and Rescue Mapping
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Michael Monaco, Julia Collins

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency geospatial analysts routinely deploy to disaster response events in support of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Incident Support Teams; as well as other federal, National Guard or active duty military units. Alls of these entities coordinate operations using the U.S. National Grid for domestic operations and the Military Grid Reference System, or MGRS, for international events. In January 2010, NGA used Esri Production Mapping software to produce thousands of USAR-MGRS gridded-atlas map sheets overnight, and rapidly disseminated them to U.S. State Department International Urban Search and Rescue teams deployed to Haiti.
