Abstract

Immediate Awareness, Immediate Response: Leveraging Satellites in an Emergency
Track: Imagery
Authors: Tara Byrnes

First Responders, the media and people other Aid workers around the world need to react and respond quickly and safely, many times on a moments notice. Satellite imagery plays a major role in the preparation and execution of a response. Together with several partners and customers, GeoEye supported efforts in response to recent events. Leveraging Esri's ArcGIS On-Line applications, GeoEye's satellite data was able to get into the hands of anyone involved in planning logistics for responders as well as the responders on the ground in both locations. The use of satellite imagery in emergency situations can lead to time and lives saved. Leveraging historical data can also help with predictive analysis and preparedness for future events. This presentation will introduce the concept of tasking satellites for emergency response as well as address how to leverage archive data for planning and mitigation efforts.
