USGS is releasing a great variety of new and historic digital topographic maps for California and the nation through two new programs. US Topo is the next generation of topographic maps from USGS. The maps were first released as beta products for California in 2009. For 2012, the maps are much improved and include contours, hydrography, and vegetated land cover. The 48 conterminous states will be updated every three years and future US Topo editions will incorporate additional content. The Historical Topographic Map Collection adds 13,700 historic maps for California, dating to 1886. The maps were gathered from several sources and scanned at a high resolution. This national project collects and distributes the entire collection of topo maps created by USGS for the country - every scale, every edition, everywhere. Both the US Topo and the Historical Collection are available in GeoPDF format as free downloads through the USGS Store.
