The Information Center for the Environment, University of California, Davis is funded by the California Department of Transportation to provide scenario planning and land use modeling assistance to rural counties in California. We will be teaming up with a rural county to conduct GIS assisted public meetings to identify the local trends in growth, the spatial features that govern where and how the county has developed in the past and will grow in the future. Public input will inform the creation of 2-3 land use scenarios including one that represents a continuation of current development patterns, and one or two others that represent alternative strategies. These scenarios will be projected using the UPlan land use model (built in ArcGIS and spatial analyst) and analyzed against publicly suggested criteria. The presentation will cover project planning, the theoretical framework and our initial public meetings. Results will be discussed next year.
